癫痫发作的定义可以定为:大脑神经元的阵发性放电，引起临床上病人和观寒者都能察觉到的各种表现。这里用大脑是除外了脊髓神经元活动所致的脊髓肌阵挛、牵张诱导的阵挛或截瘫中的屈肌痉挛。“阵发性放电”一词是用以除外诸如偏头痛或脑缺血性疾病引起的神经元活动抑制所致的短暂性偏瘫。
