为了保证宝宝能够健康成长，患有癫痫病的女性，不仅在受孕期和妊娠期间要注意饮食、癫痫用药和精神保健等方面的护理外，婴儿出生后的哺乳期间，也应当十分小心，以防止癫痫病遗传因子，通过各种途径侵袭到宝宝，以至于危害到孩子的健康成长。

一般情况，患有癫痫病史的母亲，即使癫痫病不发作了，也最好不要给宝宝喂母乳。

当然母乳是宝宝最佳的天然食品，热量高、成分配比合理，有利于宝宝的消化和吸收，但是母亲如果正在服用治疗癫痫病的药物时，最好不要用自己的乳汁喂养宝宝。

因为抗癫痫药可分泌进入乳汁，如果宝宝间接食用的药物量，超过最大限度的话，就有可能导致婴儿癫痫病的一些症状出现，比如突然间孩子头向左/右偏，低着头，手向内旋，同时肘关节发硬。一般时间很短，大概一秒钟就恢复正常。

主要方式如下：监测母亲用药后的血清药物浓度，并辅以对婴儿的临床监测。

抗癫痫药物禁用于哺乳期，因为它可能会在2岁以下婴儿中存在肝毒性。因为婴儿代谢率低，抗癫痫药物可导致镇静。监测婴儿的血清药物浓度有助于观察其毒性情况。
