外伤性癫痫是青少年常见的类型，外伤性癫痫诊断，除临床表现外，须依靠脑电图检查此，脑CT或MRL扫描亦有助于了解病灶的部位和性质。早期癫痫重要意义在于它预示发生晚期癫痫危害大，晚期癫痫指颅脑损伤3个月后出现首次发作。大多发生尤其在伤后本年内出现，长者可延迟到伤后20年。它与脑瘢痕或脑萎缩，颅内合并症等因素有关，一般发作的是指晚期癫痫，晚期癫痫治疗上有一定的困难。
