老年人癫痫病的症状可以持续很长时间，至少有14%的病人持续超过24小时，有些病人甚至可长达1周。老年患者与其他任何年龄的患者一样，应避免做那些发作时即刻带来危险的活动和工作，已知的一些诱发因素：睡眠缺乏，过度疲劳，高度紧张，过度饮酒和酗酒者突然戒酒都应避免。应说服病人长期规律服药，生活规律及适当体育锻炼。

还有产伤：是婴儿期症状性癫痫的常见病因，在生产时脑部挫伤，水肿、出血和梗塞也能导致局部脑硬化，脑性瘫痪。若干年后形成病灶。

或者先天性发育不良：先天性脑积水，胼胝体发育不全，脑皮质发育不全，先天性的脑瘫，染色体畸形等。

亦或者脑血管疾病：常见于中老年人，如脑栓塞，脑血栓，高血压脑肿瘤等均可引起癫痫病、痴呆。
