遗传因素：指对癫痫的遗传易感性。大量研究证明，癫痫产生的原因和遗传因素有关。遗传可以影响细胞膜离子通道的功能，降低惊厥阈值，引起神经元放电。双胎癫痫符合率的研究及家系脑电图的研究，都提示癫痫性素质为常染色体显性遗传，且在5～15岁之间外显率比较高。

已证实或推测与遗传因素有密切关系的癫痫综合征，包括儿童及少年失神性癫痫、少年肌阵挛性癫痫、儿童良性癫痫伴中央颞区棘波、常染色体显性遗传夜间额叶癫痫等特发性全身或局部性癫痫，其中有些综合征的基因已定位。在很多情况下，特发性和遗传性癫痫，作为同义语来使用。
