首先应该做到的就是正确先药：对已经确诊为癫痫而反复发作的患者来说,应及早正确治疗,在治疗时医生应结合癫痫不同发作类型以及患者年龄、身体状况及经济情况选择相应的抗癫痫药,并以疗效最好、副作用最小为标准。

其次，在药物治疗癫痫病的过程中，还应该根据患者的实际病情来确定是否用药：癫痫患者偶尔发作一次是不需要吃抗癫痫药的,第一次发作患者在没有查清楚病因前通常不适合吃药,可以继续观察一段时间再决定是否用吃药,对于病情较轻、发作间期长等原因和不能坚持服药的患者可以不用吃抗癫痫药。

最后，治疗癫痫病的药物剂量选择应该根据患者的实际年龄、病情的轻重而定，尽可能以最小的剂量做到完全控制癫痫发作,而又不出现或少出现副作用.在临床上抗癫痫药的使用应从小剂量开始,若无效时再逐渐增加剂量,直到能完全控制发作为止.患者应定时定量的吃药,不应该自作主张的减药、不吃药、或者少吃药.这样会对治疗效果有影响的.药量不足或突然停药会促使癫痫复发的,要知道癫痫是慢性疾病,所以这就需要患者坚持长期的吃药。
