一、影像学诊断：过去20年里，神经疾病的影像诊断技术有了突破性的飞速发展。随着这些先进的非侵入性诊断技术的应用，以前认为主要是功能性异常的老年人癫痫，现发现其老年人癫痫是由脑结构异常所引起的。原发性老年人癫痫的比例已大幅度下降了，而有因可循的继发性老年人癫痫越来越多。随着医学影像学的广泛应用，给老年人癫痫的病因诊断带来新的飞跃，但应用多年，简便、经济、准确的一些诊断手段对某些病人仍不可废弃。辅助的诊断项目选择应遵循有的放矢，由简单到复杂、经济、准确的原则。

二、脑电图诊断：脑电图是用脑电图机将脑细胞的自然放电放大数百万倍，用笔描记到纸上所成的图像。随着计算机技术的发展，我们也可以通过计算机把搜集到的脑电信息转换成信号，记录到磁盘或磁带上，再通过显示器显示原始的脑电图曲线以及重组的各种图像，我们称之为脑电地形图。近些年来，又有同步记录脑电图及拍摄病人发作时情景的视/像监测脑电图机的问世，使医生能进一步了解脑电变化与临床表现之间的关系，为老年人癫痫的诊断和鉴别诊断提供了方便。

三、实验室诊断：对于大多数病人，根据临床发作的症状表现，结合其病史和体格诊断的资料，应可以进行临床治疗。但往往有部分老年人癫痫病人，必须做进一步的辅助诊断，才便于弄清老年人癫痫的类型，并且确定，引起老年人癫痫的基本病因。有时老年人癫痫病人除了用抗老年人癫痫药外，还需要加上其它的治疗药物，如发作是由于脑结核病所引起的病人，必须同时接受适当的抗癫痫药物治疗，这样就要求我们必须通过相应的实验室诊断。
