癫痫病患者在有效的医学监督下坚持长期服药，同时也将自己在药物治疗过程中的效果、副反应等有关情况不断地向医生反映，如有必要由医生根据病情加减或更换药物或调整服药时间。病人或家属切不可轻易自行停药、换药，以免诱发病情恶化，或使已经取得酌某些疗效化为乌有。药物治疗过程中，癫痫病患者和家属的配合是治疗取得成功的关键。

癫痫病患者需长期服药，各种抗癫痫药物均有副反应，特别是长期服用时出现副反应的机会就更多。什么时候才能停药呢?停药后会不会复发?约70%的患者在得到一定的缓解期后并不复发，所以对大多数患者无疑是应该停止药物治疗癫痫病的。但不应该突然停药，必须遵循逐渐停药的原则。突然停药可能导致发作增多，甚至出现癫痫持续状态。一般认为在发作完全控制了3～4年，且脑电图无癫痫波后方可考虑逐渐停药。但脑电图异常、有加重倾向者或脑电图呈持续异常者原则上不能停药。有资料表明，减药速度慢，复发率低。减药时间超过半年复发率明显降低。全身性大发作减药、停药过程以一年为宜，小发作则需半年。
