专家解释说，老年癫痫诊断包括：60岁以上老年人出现2次或以上的痫性发作，就可以诊断为老年人癫痫。临床病史具有决定意义。脑电图及与之有关的检查是诊断癫痫最关键的辅助检查。老年癫痫的脑电图异常多表现为局灶性波活动，而痫性放电则较其他年龄组少见。
