癫痫是一种起源于大脑，并反复发作的运动感觉、自主神经、意识和精神状态不同程度的障碍。这个定义概括了癫痫症状的复杂性，更概括了癫痫的两个基本特征，即反复性和发作性,所谓反复性，是指有第一次发作后，间隔一段时间后，肯定会有第二次、第三次以至多次发作。即使是最常见的抽搐，如果只发生一次，也就不具备反复性，是不能诊断为癫痫的。所谓发作性，是指症状突然出现，也突然中止。我们也许曾见过有的患者正在行走中或吃饭时突然倒地抽搐，过一段时间后又恢复正常。

癫痫持续状态是一种急危重症，如不及时救治可出现脑水肿，脑疝，呼吸循环衰竭而死亡。家属一旦发现病人出现癫痫持续状态，应立即送往医院，送医院之前如家里备有苯巴比妥针剂、地西泮针剂或灌肠剂，可给予一次药物，然后送往医院，送医院后要向医生详细报告发病过程，给药时间及剂量，以利于医生掌握病情，合理救治。

一、癫痫发作时，迅速让病人仰卧，不要垫枕头，把缠有纱布的压舌板(或牙刷把)垫在上下牙齿间，以防病人自己咬伤舌头。随即松开衣领，将病人头偏向一侧，使口腔分泌物自行流出，防止口水误入气道，引起吸入性肺炎。同时，还要把病人下颌托起，防止因窝脖使舌头堵塞气管。

二、癫痫发作时不要强行喂水或强行按压肢体，应刺激或点压人中、合谷、足三里、涌泉等穴位。
