癫痫发作比较严重的大发作其实也只是短时间内的，属于一过性，一般也就持续一两分钟，所以急救时不要慌张，如果事发地点比较宽敞，就不要刻意去压制。如果强行压制反而可能造成患儿骨折或者软组织挫伤，另外最重要的是癫痫发作本身就呼吸不畅，急救时如果强压会让孩子喘不过气来，很可能会造成孩子窒息死亡。

在代女性发作时候家属可以先让患儿侧卧或平卧，将头部转向一侧，稍稍后仰，解开上衣，保持呼吸道通常，防止呕吐物或分泌物吸入气管引起窒息，必要时及时将分泌物吸出。对于戴眼镜的患儿，要马上摘下眼镜，避免玻璃碎裂造成伤害。适当按压人中，大多数患儿抽搐可在短时间内停止，但是并不要强制停止抽搐。

家长要注意护理方式，有人担心癫痫发作时，患儿抽搐咬伤自己的舌头，于是将筷子伸进患儿嘴里，这是非常危险的举动，筷子很可能戳到孩子的气管或者口腔。正确的方法应该是让孩子平躺在宽敞的环境，并让患儿头部侧向一边。如果怕咬住舌头，可以将孩子的下巴往上顶一顶，不让其嘴张开就行，不要伤害到患者的身体。
