癫痫病是一种神智异常病症，患者以突然发作、自行缓解、多次反复为主要特点，轻者或短时失神，或局限颤抖，或无意识运动，或答非所问，重者突然倒地、四肢抽搐、角弓反张、不省人事，甚至窒息死亡。这一顽症给患者带来痛苦，给家庭和社会带来沉重负担。癫痫的基本症状是间断发作性昏厥，不醒人事，四肢抽搐，双目上翻，目光呆滞，脸色卡白，口吐白沫，咬牙咬舌等表现。

随着科学技术的不断进步，癫痫病治疗技术和方法有了很大的提高。但直到目前，仍有不少癫痫病患者因治疗时间长认为该病无药可治、不能根治。那么癫痫病治疗失败，治疗效果不理想。癫痫病专家指出：癫痫病治疗失败原因除了一小部分确实属于难治性癫痫病外，有相当一部分是因为诊疗不当造成的。

用药量不足、过量中毒或不公道的多种药物联合应用：药量达不到有效剂量时根本无法控制发作，应根据个体化原则，经过疗效观察并配合血药浓度监测，找到最佳用药剂量。有些药物中毒后使癫痫发作变得频繁，导致药物源性发作，却经常被误判为剂量不足而盲目增加剂量。有人治疗癫痫喜欢多种药物联合使用，每种都加一点，这是十分错误的。这样容易导致中毒和耐药，有的甚至导致药物源性发作。

服用暗中掺有西药成分的纯中药：这种做法是最令人深恶痛绝的。中药中添加的西药几乎都是价格低廉的抗癫痫老药，掺以中药后就以昂贵的价格出售，而实际起作用的经常是西药成分，因不知所掺药物的成分和剂量，易导致中毒或因药物的相互作用降低其它药物的疗效。这些所谓的纯中药可能开始有效，时间久了经常会因为自身诱导或药物相互诱导作用出现耐受而失效，此时再换用其它药物也可能会影响疗效。

用药时间安排不公道：不仔细分析癫痫发作规律而机械地将每日用量平均分配，经常达不到理想的治疗效果，尤其对半衰期短的药物更是如此，最好公道安排服药时间，使血药浓度高峰时间覆盖估计发作的时间段，如主要在夜里发作的癫痫患者，晚上的药量要相对较早晨大些。
