专家指出，在既往的大多数研究中,癫痫起病年龄与生殖内分泌紊乱的关系并未受到重视。有报道显示女性癫痫患者的年龄越小PCOS的发生率越高,还有报道显示年龄较小时开始服用抗癫痫药(AED)可能与PCOS有关。年龄是PCOS或生殖内分泌紊乱的一个负相关因素。据推测,可能年幼的机体对各种导致生殖内分泌紊乱的不良刺激(包括癫痫或药物等)容易产生应答,从而影响今后的生殖内分泌功能。

调查研究表明，服用抗癫痫药物年龄越小，服用时间越长，诱发生殖内分泌，多囊卵巢综合症等疾病的几率也就越高。另外，癫痫病治疗专家表示，除了药物带来的影响外，治疗期间的经济负担会对患者心理造成影响，从而诱发所致内分泌紊乱，要谨慎选择癫痫药物及疗法。

那么，丙戊酸钠是怎么引发生殖内分泌紊乱等疾病的呢?丙戊酸钠引起PCOS的可能机制有多个:丙戊酸钠是脂肪酸的衍生物,它与血清脂肪酸竞争白蛋白的结合位点,导致血清脂肪酸增加,而脂肪酸是胰岛素释放的促进剂。还有认为丙戊酸钠通过减少热量消耗,抑制游离脂肪酸β氧化和糖生成,加重γ-氨基丁酸介导的对下丘脑中部饱中枢的抑制等因素,引起患者肥胖,导致细胞膜胰岛素受体相对减少,使得胰岛素转入细胞内减少,高胰岛素血症形成,随后高胰岛素血症增加LH刺激下卵泡膜细胞雄激素的合成,雄激素增多即为PCOS的核心。
