睡眠脑电图方法：剥夺睡眠、药物诱导睡眠、24小时脑电图监测。有时需要在脑电图检查中要做诱发试验。这主要是为了增加发现异常放电和发作的机会;过度换气(持续深呼吸3分钟)可诊断失神发作;律性闪光刺激可诊断光敏性癫痫;其他特殊刺激可诊断各种反射性癫痫。

有时需要做动态脑电图(24小时脑电图)。这是为了延长记录时间，以增加发现异常放电的机会。做动态脑电图的注意事项：尽量安静，多睡觉，保证记录质量。减少活动，不吃零食，远离各种电器，减少干扰。观察病情，做好记录，时间尽量准确。

如果癫痫正在发作时做脑电图检查，一般都可记录到痫样放电。但实际上多数病人都是在未发作时做脑电图检查，也可以发现异常放电(如过度换气、闪光及声音刺激)阳性率可有所提高，特别是如能记录到睡眠时的脑电图，癫痫的阳性率还可以有所提高，因为有些癫痫在睡眠时容易出现异常波。
