对临床上确实无症状而仅在脑电图(EEG)上出现异常放电者，不称之为癫痫发作。因为癫痫是脑的疾患，身体其他部位的神经元(如三叉神经元或脊髓前角神经元)异常和过度放电不属于癫痫发作。
