2、外界刺激与精神活动：脑波节律一般易受精神活动的影响，如当被试者将注意力集中在某一事物或做心算时，α节律即被抑制，转为低幅β波，而且精神活动越强烈，α波抑制效应就越明显，外界刺激也可引起同样的变化。这就是为什么在做脑电图时周围环境要安静，受检者要放松、不要思考问题的缘故。

3、意识状态：脑电图能够反映意识觉醒水平的变化，成人若在觉醒状态出现困倦时，脑电图就由α波占优势图形出现振幅降低，并很快转入涟波状态。入睡后脑波变化将进一步明显并与睡眠深度大致平行。在病理状态下，脑电图波形的异常又与病因及程度有关，除大多数表现为广泛性或弥漫性波外，还可见到一些其他的异常波型。临床上常根据这些异常波型来推断意识障碍的病因、程度，还可确定病位。
