至于抗癫痫药物对智力的影响，每个药的情况也不太一样。有人认为患病儿童在应用某些抗癫痫药的早期，可对患儿的认知和行为有影响，以后逐渐不明显。也有人认为对部分患儿的智力有影响，如果血中药物浓度达到中毒范围时，则影响更明显。国内有人对服用抗癫痫药的患儿记忆功能进行研究，结果是服药期间部分患儿的记忆力受到影响，但停药后可以恢复，并达到中等以上水平。

婴儿出生时，引起的儿童癫痫病的发病因素包括产伤、难产、缺氧、感染、早产、黄疸等因素;女性在孕早期患巨细胞、风疹、弓形体还有衣原体感染;后天脑细胞变异所造成的癫痫;生活的环境或者一些突发事情的发生，让儿童的大脑细胞发生了变异改变，这种情况也会促使儿童癫痫发作;遗传是造成儿童癫痫病不可忽视的一个原因，这个因素貌似从古到今都存在着，遗传来源于母体或是来自双方的家族。

女性孕期要特别慎重，防止患上一些疾病，如慢性肾炎，糖尿病，药物使用不当或各种中毒，妊娠放射病以及外伤等;年龄因素：不仅许多癫痫综合症的首次发作与年龄有关，且发作类型也是与年龄有密切关系的。如伴有中央--颞棘波的儿童良性癫痫多数会发生在5~10岁左右。癫痫性脑病在婴儿期会表现为大田原综合症，3个月后常会出现婴儿痉挛症，1岁以后常会表现为lennox综合症。
