肌阵挛发作多为遗传性疾病，是一种短促的不自主的肌肉收缩，其基本特征为肌阵挛，一般无意识障碍，发作时的表现为头颈、肢体或躯干抽动，可累及肌肉的一部分或整块肌肉，也可累及某些肌群甚至整个肌体。抽动后立即松弛，而且多为双侧性。轻者仅表现为面肌或只影响头、手、上肢;重者为全身肌肉收缩，并因之而突然跌倒。所以这种患者常在头额、鼻尖、口唇等处伤痕累累。通常是个别发作一次或在几秒钟内反复发作几次，临睡或刚醒时发作较多，甚或出现持续状态。

肌阵挛发作与阵挛性发作不同点在于其发作时间短，间隔时间长，且一般无意识障碍。本病常合并其他类型的发作，但以大发作为多见。常有精神障碍及智能缺陷，发作时脑电图表现为无固定频率的多棘-慢波或棘-慢波。

目前认为：大脑皮质、灰质、脑干、小脑和脊髓等的不同平面均可引起肌阵挛，其中以脑干下段的网状结构，特别是延脑的巨细胞核放电在发病中的意义最大，另外，也可能是继发于脑部的疾病，如神经系统变性、脑外伤、感染等。
