脑电图检查对诊断癫痫病有着很大帮助，尤其是结合多种激发方法，如过度换气、闪光刺激，以及特殊电极如蝶骨电极等，约80%的患者脑电图图形发生异常。但癫痫诊断标准仍需结合临床现象考虑。主要依照患者的临床表现加以区分，首先确定是部分性还是全身性发作，而后结合脑电图结果进一步确定患者的发作类型。

3、区别癫痫发作也是至关重要

很多患者及家属认为抽搐是癫痫的主要症状之一。其实抽搐并不是癫痫病的独有症状，其他疾病也可引起抽搐，如低钙抽搐、低血糖、小儿高热惊厥等均不属于癫痫病范畴。
