癫痫发作时因神志不清，不明外境，容易发生意外。反复频繁发作，易引起血压升高、大脑缺氧，也可能引发肢体瘫痪。癫痫反复发作和不合理用药，容易损坏大脑神经细胞，严重影响患者的智力和面容。颅内肿瘤诱发的癫痫对病人生命威胁较大，明显影响病人的存活率。

癫痫遗传倾向明显，是导致下一代发病的根本原因。由于遭受各方面的歧视和不公平待遇，可引起病人精神压力加重、焦虑、自卑、甚至产生轻生的念头。脑血管病伴有癫痫发作，可诱发或加重中风、冠心病、心绞痛、脑梗塞以及严重的心脏功能损伤，给家庭造成极大精神压力和沉重的心理负担等都是癫痫的危害。
