影响胎儿的因素主要有两个：一个癫痫发作本身，另一个是抗癫痫药物。这是患有癫痫的女性想要怀孕生孩子时必须考虑的问题。有些患癫痫的母亲只考虑吃药对孩子不好，而盲目减药停药，导致频繁的癫痫大发作，反而对胎儿造成了更大的伤害。药物的副作用固然可怕，但在医生的指导下，可以通过调整药物的种类和剂量而避免抗癫痫药物的致畸作用。因此，防止影响胎儿的正确方法是及时看专科医生，早期进行咨询癫痫病人可以怀孕吗的事情。同时，在没有发作或很少发作的前提下尽量减少抗癫痫药物的用量。一般认为胚胎发育早期的3周-8周最为重要，缺氧和药物可能对胚胎造成损害。尤其是癫痫大发作可能造成胎儿的缺氧，危害极为严重。因此，妊娠早期如有癫痫大发作的孕妇应考虑中止妊娠。非痉挛性的发作一般危害不大。大部分妊娠早期的癫痫大发作均是由于病人擅自减药停药所致。
