癫痫是慢性反复发作性短暂脑功能失调综合征。以脑神经元异常放电引起反复痫性发作为特征。癫痫是神经系统常见疾病之一，患病率仅次于脑卒中。癫痫的发病率与年龄有关。一般认为1岁以内患病率最高，其次为1～10岁以后逐渐降低。我国男女之比为1.15∶1～1.7∶1。种族患病率无明显差异。
