EEG监测发现全导3Hz棘慢波发放持续3秒钟以上即可引起失神发作。失神发作可自发出现或为某些因素诱发，同一病人的诱发因素往往比较恒定。可能的诱发因素包括情绪因素、注意力涣散、缺乏智力活动、醒觉水平降低、困倦、从睡眠中觉醒的过程、低血糖或其他代谢异常等。当患儿智力活动增强、醒觉水平提高、保持注意时一般不出现发作。过度换气对诱发失神发作非常敏感有效，如患儿能完成足够深度的过度换气，一般均能诱发出典型的脑电和临床发作。未经治疗的发作如不能被过度换气诱发，则应对典型失神发作的诊断提出质疑。
