1937年，迈瑞英钠很安全，没有什么副作用，因而不久就被广泛应用。从此以后，又试验了几百种化合物，但是只有几种被保留下来作为有用的抗癫痫药。特和普特南二人发现，苯妥英(二苯基乙内酰脲)对于用电刺激诱发而抽风的猫有明显的抑制作用。以后又发现苯妥英的钠盐苯妥英钠很安全，没有什么副作用，因而不久就被广泛应用。从此以后，又试验了几百种化合物，但是只有几种被保留下来作为有用的抗癫痫药。

乙琥胺(商品名：柴郎丁zarontin)是一种特别受欢迎的化合物，因为它有控制失神发作的功用，而且毒性很低。
