保护舌头，最好抢在出现先兆症状时将缠有纱布的压舌板放在病人的上下磨牙之间，以防阵挛期病人将自己的舌头咬伤，如果是先兆期不能放上，强直期当病人张口时叶应该放入，到阵挛期就不宜放入，压舌板压着舌头还可以防止舌后坠堵塞呼吸道。

发现有先兆时迅速的让病人平卧躺下，或者就近躺在平整的地方，如果是来不及做以上安排，发现病人要倒时，应该迅速的扶着病人，顺势让其倒下，以防其自己突然倒地摔伤头部或者身子。病人强直期头多过度后仰，可造成颈椎压缩性骨折，或者下颌脱臼，这时应该一手托着病人枕部稍用力，以阻止其颈部过伸。

癫痫病患者大发作时呼吸道分泌物较多，易造成呼吸道阻塞或者吸入性肺炎，自大发作开始，应该将病人头侧向以防，以便分泌物自然流出，另外，将病人的扣子解开，以保持呼吸道通畅。
