癫痫病人应适当限制碳水化合物的摄入量。癫痫病人所需要的热能和蛋白质与正常人相同，而碳水化合物就不需要太多，应该适当增加脂肪的供应量。另外癫痫病人也要限制水分。充分供给维生素与矿物质，尤其是铁、钙等元素;禁止食用含糖多的食物和刺激性食物。

癫痫病人不宜多吃含锌高的食物。对癫痫病人进行血锌浓度测定，发现几乎所有的癫痫病人血锌平均含量都比正常人明显增高。经长期的抗癫痫药物治疗后的病人，血锌浓度比用药前明显下降，有的甚至出现某些缺锌症状。这说明癫痫的发生与体内特别是脑内锌含量增高有密切关系。
