很多人认为癫痫是先天遗传的，是一种不治之症，其实这种观点是错误的。

从临床上来说，有遗传倾向的癫痫(如父母幼时有高热惊厥或抽搐史)一般比较容易治愈并有较好的预后。相反，后天获得性的癫痫，如外伤、脑炎后遗症所致癫痫则相当顽固，先天遗传代谢性疾病导致的癫痫，如结节性硬化、苯丙酮尿症是很少见的病症，一般预后不良。
