首先需要认清楚的是，抗癫痫病药是会有一定的副作用的。对此应辨证看待，一方面，药物尽管有副作用的一面，但其更主要是控制癫痫发作的一面，如果不服药，癫痫发作对人体的损害远远大于服药的副作用;另一方面，临床上所用的各种抗癫痫药均是经过长期科学验证对大部分患者没有副作用或仅有极轻的对健康影响不大的副作用;更何况临床医生在给病人的诊治过程中，都会定期给病人检查血常规、肝功能、肾功能等，一旦发现问题，及时处理，一般均能恢复正常，所以说在癫痫科医师的指导下长期服用抗癫痫药是安全的，患者及家属不必有太多的顾虑。

抗癫痫药的服用一般需要较长的时间，病人不可短期服药后停止用药。抗癫痫药一般要服用两周左右，血中浓度才能到达一个稳定而又有效的水平。但有的患者治病心切，吃药仅几天未看出效果，不是更换医院，就是更换医生，再就是要求医生更换药物，这样换来换去，医院去了多家，大夫看了多位，药物换了多种，却总不见效，其原因就在此。任何一种药应在治疗足够时间后才能判断是否有效。癫痫是个慢性病，需要长期服药，在服药过程中，不能突然停药，突然停药会引起癫痫的频繁发作，甚至危及生命。即使经过长时间治疗无发作的患者，一般应在发作完全停止两年以上且脑电图恢复正常，方可考虑减药直至停药，但即便如此，减药也应在医师指导下，逐渐减慢，往往从减药到停药需半年到一年甚至更长的时间。如减药过程中又有发作，应重新服用足量的药物。
