首先要确定癫痫的类型，对症用药，一般服一种抗癫痫药，在足够的血药浓度下可控制发作，不需加第二种药。但有些病人或家属在病人服药后1-2天发作仍不减，就以为无效，而要求医生加药或换药，有的甚至另选医生，这对病人的治疗很不利，可能造成治疗混乱，病情得不到很好的控制，或因服药不规律滥用药物而导致难治性癫痫。所以病人就诊时医生应向家属或病人交待服药次数、剂量以及药物存放时间，并告诉他们癫痫治疗是一个漫长的过程，一般需1-3个月得到控制，要求服药快则6-9个月，慢则1-2年，甚至2-3年才能逐渐减量，不能突然停服，开始服某一种药物时约3-10天才能观察到药物是否有效，要根据药物和病人的病情而定，不能盲目换药、加药。家属要督促病人定时服药，即使休止期也不要间断服药，不规律服药是不能控制发作的主要原因。

服用醒脑，醒神系列药物，刚开始服用10天左右，应向就诊的医生反馈服药的情况，以便我们的医生、专家们了解患者对药物的敏感性来适时的调解药物的剂量、型号，使患者尽可能的得到最好的治疗，在最短的时间内得到治愈。

服用西药的患者刚开始服药时应注意药物的急性毒性反应及过敏反应，如在服苯妥英钠后是否出现注意力不集中、走路不稳、皮疹等，服卡马西平后是否出现头晕、剥脱性皮炎等。有的药物服后可出现嗜睡，病人有个逐渐适应的过程，所以刚开始服药时应注意休息，减轻工作强度，避免参加劳累及注意力高度集中的工作，如出现严重的毒性及过敏反应，应及时向医生反映，医生可考虑换药。
