根据近期发表在《神经学》(Neurology,2003;60:575-579)杂志上的一项前瞻性研究结果显示，怀孕期间服用抗癫痫药物容易导致胎儿畸形，较低的叶酸浓度加上母亲的教育程度较低也都是造成胎儿畸形的危险因素。

芬兰赫尔辛基(Helsinki)大学的ErjaKaajaMsc表示，癫痫妇女容易生出畸形的小孩，但最主要的原因是什么，目前还不得而知。1980～1998年，研?ahref='http://hxnk.xywy.com/ks/'target='_blank'>咳嗽弊纷倭艘患也普锼?70位怀孕的癫痫妇女，其中有740位在怀孕初期(前3个月)服用抗癫痫药物，另外239位则无。结果在这些服用抗癫痫药物的怀孕妇女中，共产下28个严重畸形儿(3.8%)，未服用抗癫痫药物组仅产下2个严重畸形儿(0.8%;P=0.02)，逻辑回归分析显示，严重畸形的独立危险因素包括服用卡马西平(调整后的危险比：2.5;95%置信区间：1.0～6.0)、丙戊酸(危险比：4.1;95%置信区间：1.6～11)、奥卡西平(危险比：10.8;95%置信区间：1.1～106)、怀孕前3个月的后期、母亲体内的血中叶酸浓度太低(危险比：5.8;95%置信区间：1.3～27)，以及母亲的教育程度较低(危险比：3.0;95%置信区间：1.3～6.8)等，然而怀孕初期癫痫发作并不会增加严重畸形儿的发生几率。
