他们对425名2-49岁之间的胎儿酒精综合症对象进行了调查。

调查结果显示，不到1%的人处于癫痫症的潜伏期、6%已经患上了这种病，而且12%已经至少出现了一次癫痫发作的情况。胎儿在子宫内所接触的酒精，破坏了其大脑中与癫痫相关的部分。

另外，在胚胎发育中受到病毒感染、放射线照射或其它原因引起的胚胎发育不良可以引起癫痫;胎儿生产过程中，产伤也是引起癫痫的一个主要原因;颅脑外伤也可引起癫痫。

小儿癫痫病发病率高，它是由于脑功能不正常而引起的、表现极为复杂的一种综合征。因为病因复杂，其临床表现形式可以是多种多样的。有的表现为全身运动性大发作，还有的表现为精神运动性发作。

过去的研究结果显示，胎儿酒精综合症导致新生儿注意力不集中、多动且协调性不足。而且，如果女性在妊娠期酗酒过度，那么新生儿日后发生酒精中毒、吸食毒品以及患抑郁症的几率也较高。
