2、癫痫患者要用合适自己的药物剂量：通常从小剂量开始，逐渐增加至有效控制发作而无明显毒副作用的剂量，坚持长期按时定量服用。最好结合血浆药物浓度的监测来调整剂量。病情尚未控制，血浆浓度未达稳态时宜加量。儿童因随年龄增长体重不断增加，故需经常调整药物剂量。如是女性仅在月经期有癫痫发作，应在每次月经来潮前5-7天开始增加服药剂量，月经过后即可减回原来的小剂量维持。

3、当医生开出药物和剂量时，癫痫患者要不间断地定时服用，一次也不能忘记。患者不要认为几个月不犯病就好了，自行停药会导致更严重的发作。大发作病人必须坚持三到五年不犯病，才能在医生指导下逐渐减量，递减过程需一到两年。全程必须无复发，有复发则从头开始用药。小发作完全控制发作后，坚持用药一到两年无复发则可逐渐减量至停药，这个过程约需三到六个月。如果不再有癫痫病的症状发生，但脑电图有异常的人也不能停药，待脑电图正常时再考虑减量至停药。对继发性癫痫有时停药困难，有的可能要终生服药。
