据癫痫病专家介绍，外伤后有早发性癫痫者，其晚发癫痫的发生率为25%～30%，而外伤后没有早发癫痫病者，晚发癫痫病的发生率则仅为3%。但也有人认为，小儿的早发性与晚发性外伤性癫痫之间并无相关。脑损伤的部位是否体检与晚发性外伤癫痫病的发生有关尚未确定，但多数作者认为，顶叶，颞叶前部和内侧面的外伤似易于发生晚发性外伤性癫痫。癫痫的临床发作形式各例均不同，美白可能为全身性发作，局部性发作或局部性发作伴继发性泛化，局部性发作美白可能有运动呼吸性或感觉性先兆。外伤性癫痫一般不表现为失神发作。
