遗传因素：癫痫病人的子女有百分之五发生癫痫。

一些疾病有癫痫后遗症：脑发育不全、脑发育迟缓、脑萎缩，各种脑炎、脑膜炎、脑脓肿病人愈后部分人可有癫痫后遗证;脑血吸虫、脑囊虫病可引起癫痫。

先天性因素：脑畸形、脑积水、染色体异常等先天疾病，以及胎儿出生以前在母体内受到的损害，它可造成大脑发育异常，生后出现癫痫发作，如孕妇腹部受伤、子宫出血、紫外线照射、服用对胎儿有害药物、各种微生物尤其是风疹、麻疹病毒及弓形体感染等。

营养代谢性疾病：低血糖、糖尿病昏迷、维生素B6缺乏、甲亢等均可引起癫痫发作。

外伤和免疫力低下：外伤和有些婴幼儿经常感冒发烧，有时也可引起癫痫。

羊水吸入胎儿窒息、脐带绕颈、胎盘早剥、脐带脱垂、前置胎盘、剖腹产等，日后发病率明显增加。

中毒：铅、煤气、农药以及全身性疾病如肝性脑病、急进性肾炎、尿毒症等均可引起癫痫发作。
