儿童失神性癫痫发作一般主要表现为短暂的意识丧失，玩耍或吃饭中突然愣住眼神发呆凝视前方，手中东西可以掉下来，持续时间不超过30秒，意识突然恢复可以继续发作前的动作，也有些儿童在发作中可以有眼睑震颤、手轻度阵挛、口部有一些动作如舔唇和吞咽等，失神发作的儿童脑电图很有特色，表现为两侧大脑半球从前到后都表现为两侧同时出现的每秒3次的棘复合波，这些都是失神性癫痫诊断的典型特征。

一般失神性癫痫发作仅见于儿童患者，多发生于4-8岁，在所有发作类型中是发作频率最高的，每天可达数十次甚至数百次，虽然发作如此频繁但是儿童智力一点不受影响，考试常常名列前茅，治疗效果也好，青春期以后绝大多数发作消失，但是也不是绝对的，所以癫痫患者家长要及时带孩子去治疗。

另外，除了这种癫痫的失神性发作外，还有一种发作不仔细观察很难与失神发作区分，叫不典弄失神发作，这咱发作持续时间较长，尤其是发呆凝视后意识并不立即恢复，有一段稍长时间的朦胧期，在此时间内别人问话可做哼、哈的简单回答。可以无目的的活动，以后才逐渐复至完全清醒，脑电图的表现也与失神发作不同，不典型失神发作大部分都有明确的病因，治疗效果很差，并且严重的影响智力，家长们一定要注意。
