1.原发性癫痫:

原发性癫痫又称特发性癫痫，是指一种少见的，于少儿时期起病的，以典型的大发作(全身性强直一阵挛性发作)或以典型失神为临床表现，脑电图呈对称弥散性改变，而在临床_上却找不到病因的癫痫。这种癫痫的发生可能与遗传因素有关。据统计，原发性癫痫的亲属患癫痫的发病率比一般人群高6一10倍。

2.隐源性癫痫:

隐源性癫痫不同于原发性癫痫，临床资料表明这种病人应该是症状性的，但通过详细的各种检查，均未找到明确的病因，就称为隐源性癫痫。

有些过去认为找不到病因的癫痫，由于近代诊断手段的不断进步而不发现了明确的病因。例如大脑灰质异位，在19世纪病理检查已发现了，并明确为患者生前癫痫的病因。灰质异位是大脑很微小的发育畸形，所谓灰质一般都在大脑表面由神经细胞组成，而异位的灰质则在大脑深部。20世纪80年代磁共振成像(MRI)应用于临床以后在生前即可发现灰质异位，而属于症状性癫痫。

3.继发性癫痫:

继发性癫痫亦称症状性癫痫，是由于其他疾病导致的癫痫发作，癫痫发作是原发病的一个症状，如脑的局部或弥散性病变，全身性代谢或中毒性病变等。其中颅内疾病继发的癫痫病最常见。所以今后随着检查手段的进步，肯定原发性和隐源性的范畴会越来越少。
