在许多情况下，突发性的癫痫病和遗传性质的癫痫可以等同，但也有一些情况两者并不相同，如症状性癫痫中有许多遗传性疾病，例如结节性硬化、神经纤维瘤病等，癫痫只是这些遗传性疾病造成的脑损伤引起的症状。换句话说，此时遗传的是这些疾病本身而不是癫痫病。
