癫痫是种迁延数年的慢性神经系统疾病，虽在不同程度上影响患者的生活质量，但对患者寿命影响较小，癫痫死亡率很低，死亡由本身直接引起者更为少见，即使在癫痫持续状态死亡，也不见由癫痫本身所致。

癫痫死亡原因(除自然死亡外)主要见于以下几种情况：①癫痫发作造成的意外(人身伤亡)事故;②自杀;③死于引起癫痫发作的原发病;④与治疗药物有关的癫痫死亡极为罕见;⑤由于患者不遵医嘱，突然停药，诿发了心脏传导阻滞所致。其中以癫痫持续状态及发作时的意外事故造成死亡较多见;癫痫持续发作20分钟可导致皮层缺氧，发作60分钟后脑内海马、杏仁核、小脑、丘脑等细胞组织受损，继而出现功能紊乱、呼吸衰竭等，若持续状态超过13个小时，缺氧、缺血性脑损伤持续时间过长，可以引起全身性功能衰竭而死亡，但这种癫痫死亡的情况不多，只占癫痫患者的千分之一。
