癫痛因其可出现在任何年龄，具有很多不同的发作形式，申不同病因所产生，且有多种发生的基础，可被各种环境因素所促发，并可以没有明确原因而发作或终止，所以癫痫的流行病学较其他神经疾病更为复杂。为此，规定其使用的术语是十分重要的。

癫痫发作的定义可以定为:大脑神经元的阵发性放电，引起临床上病人和观寒者都能察觉到的各种表现。这里用大脑是除外了脊髓神经元活动所致的脊髓肌阵挛、牵张诱导的阵挛或截瘫中的屈肌痉挛。“阵发性放电”一词是用以除外诸如偏头痛或脑缺血性疾病引起的神经元活动抑制所致的短暂性偏瘫。

癫痫病的治疗并非一早一夕就能完成的，除了持之以恒的治疗外，患者对于医院和疗法的选择也是至关重要的。
