癫痫是大脑神经元过度异常放电引起的，突发的短暂的症状和体征。临床上的表现多样，包括运动感觉异常，精神和自主功能障碍。有两眼上翻，牙关紧闭，口吐白沫，上肢屈伸，下肢伸直，面色苍白或青紫。癫痫小发作时，出现，突然在活动中中断，意识丧失。

苯巴比妥钠注射剂也属于镇静剂，不过要通过用量来决定。苯巴比妥钠注射液，适应症为治疗癫痫，对全身性及部分性发作均有效，一般在苯妥英钠、酰胺咪嗪、丙戊酸钠无效时选用。也可用于其他疾病引起的惊厥及麻醉前给药。肌内注射 抗惊厥与癫痫持续状态，成人一次100～200mg，必要时可4～6小时重复1次。麻醉前给药 术前0.5～1小时肌内注射100～200mg。
